Ohio troopers say that 59 year old truck driver Brent Markwell was westbound on U.S. Route 52 when an eastbound Honda Civic driver crossed the center line into Markwell’s lane.

The semi truck and Honda collided head on. The semi truck was sent crashing into the eastbound lane, where it hit a third vehicle, then crashed down an embankment toward the Ohio River.

Markwell passed away at the scene after crews tried for hours to rescue him.

Four others including the Honda driver were taken to the hospital for treatment.

U.S. Route 52 was closed until around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday morning while crews worked to clean up the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
