BREAKING: FMCSA boss to step down

Published:

The Acting Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will be stepping down from his position by the end of the month.

FMCSA head Jim Mullen will step at the end of August, the agency confirmed.

“At the end of the month, Jim Mullen will be leaving the Department. We greatly appreciate Jim’s service and the work he has done for our country. Wiley Deck, currently a Senior Policy Advisor to the Secretary and former FMCSA Director of Government Affairs, will assume the role of Deputy Administrator of FMCSA,” a DOT spokesperson confirmed via email to CDLLife.

Mullen stepped into the role of Acting Administrator in the fall of 2019.

In the months that he served as the head of the FMCSA, the agency was able to push through a long-awaited Hours of Service Final Rule. Mullen was also at the agency’s helm when the FMCSA launched its Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Last October, then-FMCSA Administrator Raymond Martinez abruptly announced that he was stepping down by months end after serving in his role for a little over a year. While he was in office, he prioritized making changes to Hours of Service regulations .

Before starting a consulting firm in 2016, Mullen served as the executive vice president and general counsel for Werner Enterprises.
