Coughing attack causes semi truck driver to ‘black out,’ crashes through antique mall

Published:

On June 15, 2020 a semi truck swerved across multiple lanes of traffic, down a ditch and into Peru Antique Mall in Peru, Illinois.

The driver, David T. Joy, 48, of Omaha, Nebraska told police he suffered a coughing attack that resulted in him blacking out of consciousness.

Police say it appears the semi was traveling eastbound on I-80 when it crossed the median, struck a westbound car, continued off the interstate, and drove through the mall from west to east.

First responders reported to the scene around 10:11 a.m. Monday. Joy does not recall the incident and told Illinois State Police that when he regained consciousness, he was inside the Peru Antique Mall.

Live footage of the aftermath can be seen below.

No one in the car was injured and no one was in the building at the time of the crash. Joy was taken to the Illinois Valley Community Hospital. He has been cited with improper lane usage, said the Illinois State Police.

The antique mall had recently closed and two new businesses were scheduled to move into the building by July or August. The building sustained substantial damages.
