On the evening of May 29, U.S Border Patrol agents discovered a sealed tractor trailer with 58 immigrants hidden inside.

According to a news release by U.S Customs and Border Protection, the red Volvo tractor trailer and its contents were discovered during an immigration inspection at a check point at mile marker 29 of Interstate 35, north of Laredo.

Authorities were alerted by a service canine of possible contraband in the trailer. Upon opening the trailer, the 58 immigrants were all found to be illegally smuggled from the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The driver, identified as David Castro Gomez, was arrested and charged with transport, attempt to transport and conspire to transport immigrants who had crossed the border illegally.

When asked about what he was hauling, Gomez allegedly stated, “I don’t know. I’m doing a favor for a friend.”

Gomez claims to not know the man who hired him to drive the tractor from San Antonio.

“Gomez claimed the unknown male subject told him they knew where his children were in Mexico and if Gomez did not do the job, something would happen to them,” states the affidavit filed on Monday.

Gomez alleges he was paying of a debt of 6,000 pesos, or around $300, that he had incurred from a man in Mexico.

The individuals and the driver, a U.S. Citizen, are in custody and the case is pending further investigation.
