Drivers are abandoning vehicles after flooding shuts down Houston highway

Texas transportation officials are warning drivers not to drive into flood waters after a damaging tropical storm left a major roadway submerged.

Highway 288 at the South Loop is currently closed in both directions due to high water brought about by Tropical Storm Beta.

According to ABC 13, at least three vehicles have become stuck on Highway 288 due to flood waters and some drivers are opting to abandon their vehicles.

Some high profile vehicles, like the semi truck in the video below, have been able to make it through the high waters on Highway 288.

High water rescues are being performed by the Houston Fire Department.

The Houston Police Department issued a warning late Tuesday morning to drivers to avoid going onto area roadways if possible.
