Earlier this month, officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) say that they discovered a large amount of “drug paraphernalia” at a New York border crossing.
The incident occurred on October 4 at the Alexandria Bay Port of Entry in Alexandria Bay, New York when the interest of officers was piqued by a CMV with a load manifested as ““smoking glass ball water pipe,” CBP said in an October 16 news release.
After a non-intrustrive imaging inspection, CBP officers took a closer look at the load and found “discovered 8 pallets of glass smoking pipes and an unlawful importation of drug paraphernalia.”
Investigators also discovered that the “shipment’s country of origin contained marking errors and inaccuracies.”
A CBP Import Specialist examined the 2,412 glass pipes glass pipes found on the truck and determined that all of them were drug paraphernalia.
The shipment of $156,000 worth of glass pipes and “bongs” was seized on October 14 for “import violations.”
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the term drug paraphernalia means “any equipment, product or material of any kind which is primarily intended or designed for use in manufacturing, compounding, converting, concealing, producing, processing, preparing, injecting, ingesting, inhaling, or otherwise introducing into the human body a controlled substance.”
