Gas tanker explosion kills at least 13 people in Mexico

Mexican authorities say that a truck driver and at least a dozen others were killed in a massive tanker explosion on Monday.

The explosion occurred around 11 a.m. on November 16 on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway, which connects the cities of Tepic and Guadalajara.

Local authorities say that a double tanker truck hauling liquified gas was traveling towards Guadalajara when the driver lost control, causing the truck to overturn.

The crash triggered a massive explosion which killed a dozen people in nearby vehicles. The truck driver was also killed.

“The explosion reached an area of around two hectares, in which four vehicles … were totally damaged: a tanker truck, two compact vehicles and a truck,” said the Nayarit Attorney General’s Office.

A 31 year old woman survived but was hospitalized for severe burns.
