Icy 50 vehicle pileup reported in Chicago

More than a dozen people were taken to the hospital following a major pileup crash in Chicago on Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred around 5 a.m. on the Kennedy Expressway near North Avenue.

Authorities say that at least 50 vehicles were involved in the pileup.

Fourteen people were taken to the hospital for treatment of various injuries, none of which are thought to be life threatening. Another 32 people were evaluated at the scene for injuries but won’t be transported to the hospital, firefighters say.

Deputy District Fire Chief John Giordano said that snow and ice on the road along with “vehicles driving at high rates of speed caused the accident.”

All inbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway will remain closed for several hours for cleanup and investigation of the crash.

Icy roads caused multiple additional crashes all over the Chicago area on Wednesday morning.
