IRS to truckers: Time is running out to file tax

Tax

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a reminder to truckers that it’s almost time to file and pay a tax.

On Thursday, the IRS issued a statement alerting truckers that many have only until August 31 to file Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return and pay any tax that is due on vehicles that were operated during the month of July.

The tax is based on vehicle weigh and in most cases applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. Most trucks and buses will be subject to the tax, the IRS says.

If you’re not sure if you need to pay the tax, the IRS has an online tool you can use to determine if you need to file. Click here to access the tool.

Those who do need to pay the tax are encouraged to do so online. Payment can also be sent online. You can click here to electronically file Form 2290 and pay online.

The IRS says that users will receive a watermarked Schedule 1 from your e-file provider via email after your Form 2290 is accepted.
