Marine units still searching for missing tow truck driver after accident knocks him over bridge

Published:

An ongoing search is being conducted in Charleston County, South Carolina waterways for a tow truck driver involved in an accident where he was presumed to have gone over the side of a bridge.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning when the tow truck driver along with Charleston County Sheriff’s deputy, Michael Costanzo, stopped on Don Holt Bridge to assist a driver of a disabled vehicle.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Matt Southern said a Ford F-350 truck pulling a trailer struck the rear of the deputy’s Dodge Charger, which in turn struck other vehicles and the responding deputy and the tow truck driver who were outside of their vehicles.

The tow truck driver couldn’t be found immediately after the accident and was believed to have gone over the side of the bridge.

Marine units from the North Charleston Police Department, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard have spent a total of 14 hours in the search so far.

Costanzo remains in the hospital after sustaining major injuries.

The identity of the tow truck driver hasn’t been released.

This is a developing story.
