Motorist’s ignored stop sign leads to fatal crash with tractor trailer

Published:

A motorist is dead after running a stop sign and crashing into the side of a moving semi truck on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened on December 8th at around 12:55 p.m. in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Virginia State police say that 61-year-old Shirley J. Scott was traveling along Tom Fork Road near the Morgan Olson Way and Cane Creek Parkway intersection when she failed to observe a posted stop sign and drove straight through the three-road intersection.

The car then drove straight into a semi truck heading south on Cane Creek Parkway. The collision caused the two vehicles to skid several hundred yards down the road before catching on fire, the front end of the car wedged beneath the trailer. Residents say they were able to hear loud popping noises and see rising smoke immediately following the wreck, reported the Danville Register & Bee

Scott was pronounced dead on scene, but it is not yet clear whether the truck driver sustained any injuries.

Virginia State Police are still investigating the incident and no further information has been released.
