Multiple crashes reported after truck gets stuck in tunnel

Virginia State Police are investigating a series of crashes that occurred after a semi truck became wedged in a tunnel in Norfolk on Tuesday morning.

The truck became stuck in the westbound Downtown Tunnel from Norfolk to Portsmouth around 10 a.m., scraping the top of the tunnel and causing significant damage to both the trailer and the roof of the tunnel.

Two crashes have been reported in the Downtown Tunnel since the truck became stuck.

The first crash involved the stuck truck and two SUVs.

The second crash involved two SUVs and occurred in the traffic backup caused by the initial crash.

Three people — a woman and two children — who were involved in the first crash were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

No one was hurt in the secondary crash.

The westbound Downtown Tunnel is closed until further notice.
