Police shoot and kill man who threatened trucker, worker, with knife

Local police in California have released new information on an officer-involved shooting incident that ended a knife attack at a business location on Wednesday.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. on October 14 at a community park in Chico, California when a suspect later identified as 30 year old Stephen William Vest got into an altercation with a security guard after he threatened people with a knife.

Police say Vest fled the scene and attacked people inside vehicles at the intersection of East 20th St. and MLK Jr. Parkway before he moved on to a Petco store location.

At the Petco, police say that Vest attempted to attacked a truck driver who was unloading his trailer as well as a store worker, chasing them inside the store.

Three officers with the Chico Police Department arrived on scene at the Petco. They attempted to subdue Vest but were unsuccessful and two of the officers fired multiple rounds at Vest.

Vest died at the scene after receiving attempts to save his life.

No other injuries were reported.

The two officers who fired on Vest, Sergeant Nick Bauer and Officer Tyler Johnson, have been placed on administrative leave as an investigation by the Butte County District Attorney’s Office into the officer-involved shooting continues.

According to KRCRTV, Vest was homeless and on felony probation for previous attacks on police.
