On June 13, 2020 a semi truck on I-40 in Oklahoma City leaked thousands of gallons of sunflower oil on the highway.
The semi continued to drive for several miles as the sunflower oil spilled onto the road.
“I witnessed the first accident as the semi drove down the highway! It was awful. He finally pulled over after he realized what was happening,” said a witness.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the leak caused about 7 different collisions.
“I was in front of tinker AFB in 40 when I first hit the oil and a car spun out and hit the retaining wall. Then I came up I the truck. I just washed my car and got covered with the stuff. I couldn’t see out if the windshield and hit the windshield wash and wipers,” said one Facebook user.
“I was heading home from Oklahoma heart hospital with my mom and got this dumped all over my moms car while I was driving. It was a mess. We were on I-40 between S May and Shields blvd,” said another witness on the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Facebook page.
According to Oklahoma Department of Transportation officials, around 11 a.m. eastbound I-40 was narrowed to one lane for a 20-mile stretch between MacArthur Boulevard and Interstate 240. An environmental company responded to the scene to evaluate the spill and clean up.
