The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released a detailed report on substance use violations compiled by their new national drug and alcohol database.
The FMCSA recently released a summary report for the month of May that broke down the data on the types of drugs that were identified in positive CDL holder drug tests that were reported to the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
As of June 1, 2020, here are the top 8 substances that were identified in positive substance use tests reported to the Clearinghouse.
Of the total of 21,156 positive substance use tests, 80% were drug violations (as opposed to alcohol violations).
The FMCSA’s Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse rule went into effect on January 6, 2020.
The FMCSA says that it is intended to improve highway safety by giving law enforcement, employers, and other authorities real-time access to a CDL holder’s drug and alcohol records.
While truck drivers were not required to immediately register with the Clearinghouse by the January 6 deadline, they must be registered in order to respond to an employer’s request for consent prior to a pre-employment query or other full query being conducted.
Employers must register with the Clearinghouse within the first year of implementation in order to complete a required annual query of the database on all truck driver employees.
