Truck driver attempts carjacking after wrecking rig in police chase

Published:

A truck driver has been arrested on multiple charges after driving recklessly, leading officers on a police chase, and attempting to steal a car.

The series of events happened on Thursday, October 15th in San Joaquin County, California, beginning at noon.

California Highway Patrol says that the chase began near Stockton and continued into the Los Banos area, where officers in patrol cars called it off. A CHP aircraft then began tracking the runaway semi truck before it crashed into three other vehicles and overturned on southbound Interstate 5 near Derrick Avenue.

The truck driver then exited his wrecked rig and allegedly attempted to carjack motorists stuck in the traffic caused by the incident. However, police soon arrived on the scene and took him into custody after a brief struggle.

Luckily, only minor injuries were sustained by the motorist involved in the crash, reported CBS Sacramento.

The truck driver has since been identified as 26-year-old Derris Marquis Kennedy from Alabama. He has been booked into the Fresno County Jail and is facing multiple charges including reckless driving causing injury, hit-and-run, resisting arrest, and battery on a peace officer.
