Truck inspection on NYS Thruway leads to driver arrest on weapons charges

New York State Police (NYSP) arrested a truck driver after a commercial vehicle inspection led to the discovery of a several semi-automatic weapons.

The truck inspection occurred around 12:30 p.m. on December 14 after an NYSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit directed a tractor trailer into the Depew Tandem Lot at exit 49 on I-90 for a commercial vehicle inspection.

During the inspection, troopers interviewed 28 year old Indiana-based truck driver Zayne R. Coston. Based on the interview, “probable cause to search the interior of the vehicle was established.”

When troopers searched Coston’s truck, they discovered 4 semi-automatic assault rifles (one loaded), 4 semi-automatic handguns (three of which were loaded), 13 high capacity magazines, three of the magazines were charged with several rounds, and various other caliber ammunition.

Coston was placed under arrest.

Troopers later learned that Coston is a convicted felon in Illinois and subsequently charged him with 5 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree; Class C Felonies, 17 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree; Class D Felonies, and 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Firearm; a Class E Felony.

Coston is scheduled to appear in court on December 18, 2020.
