Trucker threatened at gunpoint as part of crime spree that led to White Castle manager’s murder

Ohio authorities have indicted a suspect on multiple charges in connection with a two hour crime spree that ended in the murder of a fast food worker.

On October 30, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announced that a grand jury had returned a 12 count indictment that included murder and several other felonies against 29 year old Mark Reynolds for his alleged role in a series of crimes that occurred in Columbus, Ohio, on October 23.

O’Brien says that the two hour crime spree began with Reynolds threatening a truck driver a gunpoint and ended with a police standoff in a gas station.

O’Brien describes the sequence of events in a news release:

At approximately 5:00 am, Jamall D. Shellow, age 27, was working at  the WW transport trucking company. As he was getting into his semi-truck on the lot, he saw Reynolds climbing into the passenger side of the vehicle.  Reynolds pointed a gun at him and demanded that the victim drive him away from the area.  The victim fled on foot to a nearby fire station and reported the crime.  Approximately an hour later, Reynolds entered the White Castle restaurant located at the corner of W. Broad Street and N. Wilson Road.  Reynolds fired his gun into a group of 5 employees behind the counter.  The store manager, Amanda Rush, age 30, was shot in the head and died at the scene.  Employee Timothy L. Mathies, age 57, was shot in the wrist and was treated for his injuries.  Also in the line of fire, but not struck were White Castle employees Kelly Spry, Breanna Monroe, and Zoe Thacker, as well as a drive through window patron, Frank Baldwin. Reynolds fled the scene and then travelled to the PNC Bank located at 3500 W. Broad Street where he fired shots at multiple glass doors of the bank.  Reynolds last stop that morning was the Certified gas station located at 3240 W. Broad Street.  Victim Dimary Ortiz was driving her car eastbound on W. Broad Street across the street from the Certified gas station when her passenger side door was struck by gunfire.  Reynolds barricaded himself inside the gas station but was taken into custody just before 7:00 am.

Reynolds is scheduled for arraignment on November 4, 2020.

White Castle has established a scholarship fund in Rush’s honor.
