Trump hosts White House gathering to thank truckers for heroics during pandemic

On Thursday, President Trump held a major event on the South Lawn of the White House to recognize and praise the efforts of the U.S. truckers who have kept the nation moving in the face of a crippling virus outbreak.

During the Coronavirus outbreak, federal authorities have recognized truck drivers as essential workers and have lifted regulations to speed deliveries as panicked shoppers leave grocery store shelves bare and put the national supply chain to the test.

On one hand, in the weeks since Trump declared Coronavirus a national emergency, there has been an outpouring of support for truck drivers from the public at large. On the other, truckers have struggled to find food and safe parking as restaurants and rest areas across the country closed for Coronavirus.

This is not the first time that Trump has taken time out to thank truckers and the trucking industry.

On March 19, he tweeted out “THANK YOU” and the hashtag “ThankATrucker” to raise awareness about the efforts that truckers were making during the pandemic.

Earlier this month, Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) put out an urgent request for help from the President on behalf of truckers asking for COVID-19 testing and quarantine solutions for drivers who are out on the road.
