April 15, 2020 – You don’t see truck drivers very often. They aren’t quite as visible as store associates who interact with the public daily. But Walmart knows how crucial drivers are during the current pandemic, and the company is hiring more professional drivers to work in its private fleet, showing its appreciation.
Just as Walmart’s in-store associates work tirelessly to keep shelves clean and restocked, Walmart’s professional fleet of drivers keep products moving to stores, hospitals and anywhere else they’re needed.
In truth, over-the-road drivers are at the forefront of the pandemic response, but people often forget how absolutely crucial professional over-the-road drivers are to supporting our country’s way of life. Only now, much of the public is realizing just how vital they are to the supply chain.
Walmart associates have recognized the importance of truck drivers for a long time. And since social distancing practices have moved into full swing, many have taken the time to show their appreciation and respect for those behind the wheel.
For example, Walmart employee Tim H., his wife, Abbie, and their children (pictured) set up near a Walmart distribution center to show drivers appreciation with bright posters featuring thank-you messages and brighter smiles. They are among the many who have offered food, encouragement and more to drivers on the job moving the freight America needs today and every day.
Walmart’s leadership doesn’t take its truck drivers for granted either. Recently, President & CEO of Walmart Inc. Doug McMillon recognized associates all over the country who are making an enormous difference. In a video message, McMillon called Walmart associates heroes saying, “I’ve always seen your spark, your dedication and humanity, but today, as you’re being challenged more than ever, I see heroes. Not just to me but to so many.”
This appreciation for drivers isn’t just lip service. Walmart’s private fleet drivers enjoy some of the best benefits and pay in the industry. According to private fleet driver, Robert Sullivan, “The drivers are very well respected over here. They’re admired for what they do.”
Walmart is hiring professional drivers and growing its fleet by more than 500 truck drivers this year, mainly across the West and the East Coast.
Qualified drivers are encouraged to apply now, so their applications can be processed quickly. That way, they can get on the road as soon as possible.
