Body of truck driver who crashed off Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in December is finally found, family says

Family members say that they have recovered the body of a truck driver who passed away late last year after crashing off of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia.

The body of 47 year old box truck driver Erik Mezick was reportedly found on Friday shortly after 9 a.m. by a local on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore beach in North Carolina, local outlet WTKR reports.

Mezick passed away on December 29, 2020, after his truck went overboard on the east side of the northbound span of the CBBT between North Channel Bridge and the northernmost island. Mezick was making a routine delivery to Virginia Beach when he crashed off the CBBT.

Witnesses said that they saw Mezick exit the truck and float west in the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies searched for Mezick’s body but eventually called off the search.

Mezick leaves behind a wife of 24 years and two children.

Mezick’s family wrote in a Facebook post, “Erik has been found in North Carolina! We have just been notified! We will be back with more information as we get it! We said he would present himself when he was ready and in true Eric style he did just that today on his favorite beach! We love you all!”
