CHP investigating reports of ‘unusual incident’ involving a Tesla

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that they are looking into reports of a man sitting in the backseat of a Tesla with no one behind the wheel in the Oakland area.

On May 8, CHP’s Golden Gate Division confirmed that the agency had been made aware of an “unusual incident” involving a Tesla.

CHP says that the incident involves “a man riding in the backseat of a Tesla traveling on Bay Area roadways, with no other person being seated in the driver seat.”

Troopers say that they received reports about the man in the Tesla third-hand and are actively investigating.

CHP shared two photos that appear to show a man sitting in the backseat of the Tesla with no one in the driver’s seat.

CHP is asking drivers who spot an unusual incident to immediately call 911 so that an officer can respond an an investigation can officially begin.

Tesla says that “current Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”
