The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) based in Colorado has shared disturbing body cam video of an officer’s attempt to investigate a call about cargo theft that left that officer with multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting incident occurred early on May 20, 2021, near Hugo, Colorado, according to a new report released by LCSO on August 4.
A truck driver called police around 3:15 a.m. for a report of a person believed to be stealing items from a semi trailer.
Deputy Michael Hutton was dispatched to the scene to investigate.
Moments after arriving on the scene and meeting with the truck driver who called police, shots are fired at Hutton.
“Before the investigation could even begin, Deputy Hutton was ambushed and shot within seconds,” LCSO said.
Hutton was shot three times, suffering wounds to his hand, arm, and torso. A bullet pierced Hutton’s lung and left the Deputy with life-threatening injuries.
Backup arrived on scene within 21 minutes and Hutton was transported to the hospital for treatment. Hutton ultimately survived and is expected to return to full duty.
A manhunt ensued and police located suspect Tristan Ensinger, 25, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and learned that Ensinger had committed a murder a few days prior to the ambush.
LCSO says that they released the body cam video following an investigation into the incident because of information being shared in the community that was “untrue and incorrect.”
