Crash off of I-20 leaves semi truck submerged in Georgia canal

A truck driver survived a crash off of the interstate into a body of water in the Augusta, Georgia, area on Monday evening.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. as a semi truck traveling east on I-20 crashed through the guardrail, off of the bridge overpass, and into the Augusta Canal.

A nearby vehicle was struck by debris from the crash.

According to the Augusta Fire Department, the truck driver made it out of the vehicle and was taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.

All lanes of eastbound I-20 were closed between the Riverwatch Parkway exit and the South Carolina border for the remainder of Monday night and into Tuesday morning. One lane of eastbound I-20 reopened by 4 a.m. on Tuesday, but heavy traffic delays have been reported in the area.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
