Dash cam video reportedly shows the moment that D.C. pedestrian bridge collapses

Published:

A YouTube user shared dash cam video of the events that caused a bridge to collapse onto a Washington D.C. interstate, injuring several people.

The bridge collapse occurred shortly before noon on Wednesday, June 23, at I-295 in northeastern Washington D.C., with the structure falling into active lanes of traffic and partially crushing a truck beneath.

Authorities say that a total of five people were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries as a result of the bridge collapse.

Chris Geldart, Washington D.C. deputy mayor for public safety, said that a collision with a vehicle likely brought the bridge down. “We do believe that it was caused by the collision. these are all preliminary findings right now but everything we see on the accident scene right now leads to this being a collision pulling the bridge off the moorings,” Geldart said.

Geldart also said that the bridge was given a poor safety rating during a recent inspection. “Bridge 66 was inspected in February 2021 resulting in a May 25 inspection report giving the bridge a rating of poor condition (A number 4 rating),” he said.

Just hours after the bridge collapsed, YouTube user Raphael Williams shared dash cam video that reportedly captured the crash as it happened.
