FedEx driver dumps 300+ packages in shipping “debacle”

A FedEx driver has been accused of dumping more than 300 packages into a ravine as police investigate what authorities are calling a “debacle.”

The 300 to 400 boxes “of assorted sizes” were discovered in a wooded ravine on a private property in Blount County, Alabama on Wednesday, November 24th.

The Blount County Sheriff’s office, whose officers responded to the initial discovery of the packages, had this to say about the incident:

“To everyone in West Blount County missing packages from FedEx. I currently have a deputy on a location where it appears 300-400 boxes of assorted sizes have been thrown off a ravine. An area manager from FedEx is en route to the scene. Hopefully we will have some answers soon.

Update: 1712 hours. FedEx on the scene. They’re bringing another truck to get all the packages.

Update1930 hours. FedEx has sent multiple trucks and drivers from all over the south and will begin loading the packages as soon as the sun comes up. I will have a deputy on scene until the work is complete.”

By Monday, November 29th, Blount County Sheriff, Mark Moon, described the incident as a “debacle,” and reported that the same driver had been found to have “dumped at least six times,” meaning FedEx is technically now a victim of six different property theft cases, reported NPR.

“As of right now we are looking at around 450 individual victims, some in Blount County, some not, that investigators are attempting to work their cases,” Moon wrote in a post. “This will not be an easy or fast case to close.”

“We have reviewed this situation and can confirm that the individual involved is no longer providing service on behalf of FedEx Ground,” a FedEx company statement said.

“We regret the inconvenience this situation has caused and appreciate our customers’ understanding throughout the package recovery process. Where possible, recovered packages are being delivered to the intended recipients. In the event of a damaged shipment, we will make every effort to work with the affected shippers to reach a resolution.”

No further information surrounding the case has been released.
