Here are the (many) road closures and CMV restrictions for the Presidential Inauguration

Federal authorities and transportation officials are shutting down multiple road amid heightened security for the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the U.S. Secret Service recently released a joint transportation plan surrounding the 2021 Presidential Inauguration. 

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and plan alternate routes if possible as heavy traffic delays have already been reported.

VDOT Road Closures

From 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 through 6 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 21, I-66 and I-395 bridges into D.C. will be closed and traffic will be diverted as follows:

I-66: Eastbound traffic will be diverted at Route 110 (Exit 75).
I-395: Northbound traffic will be diverted at the George Washington Memorial Parkway (Exit 10B).
I-395 Express Lanes: When the lanes are northbound, all traffic will be diverted at the Eads Street exit. (Updated 1/18/21)

• I-395 NB Express Lanes (Rochambeau Memorial Bridge)
• I-395 NB main lanes (Arland Williams, Jr. Memorial Bridge)
• I-395 NB Express Lanes slip ramp from the main lanes (last left-side slip ramp in Virginia also known as “Ramp G”)
• I-395 NB main lanes will be diverted at GW Parkway exit

• Route 1 NB from Reagan National Airport (DCA) to I-395 NB (Arland Williams, Jr. Memorial Bridge)

• I-66 EB at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge closed; all traffic diverted to Route 110 SB

Arlington Memorial Bridge will be closed by the National Park Service.

United States Secret Service Road Closures

The following bridges will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists beginning Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 6:00 a.m. These closures will remain in effect until 6 am, Thursday, January 21. See below for information specific to each of the affected bridges:

• Theodore Roosevelt Bridge – East bound traffic will be closed to all vehicles entering the city. West bound traffic will flow normally, leaving the city.
• Arlington Memorial Bridge – No traffic allowed in either direction.
• I-395 & 14th Street Bridge – North bound traffic will be closed to all vehicles entering the city. South bound traffic will flow normally, leaving the city.

The following bridges will have commercial vehicle restrictions, but remain open to local vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists beginning on January 19, 2021 at 6:00 a.m. Motorists should expect delays and allow for extra time as commercial vehicles will not be allowed access. These will remain in effect until 6:00 a.m., Thursday, January 21. See below for information specific to each of the affected bridges:

• 11th Street Bridge – Travel lanes into the Navy Yard area will have commercial vehicle restrictions but remain open to local traffic.
• John Phillip Sousa (Pennsylvania Ave.) Bridge – Travel lanes west toward downtown will have commercial vehicle restrictions but open to local traffic. South bound traffic will flow normally, toward Maryland.
• Key Bridge – will remain open, but access to Whitehurst Freeway will be closed. Traffic from the Key Bridge will make a left turn onto Canal Rd/MacArthur Blvd and local traffic may go right on M Street. East bound on M Street will have commercial vehicle restrictions.

Freeway and Tunnel Information

• Southeast/Southwest Freeway – Closed.
• Potomac River Freeway – Open Northbound, closed Southbound from Jan. 16 at 6 a.m. through Jan. 21 at 6 a.m. Access to Theodore Roosevelt Bridge remains open.
• Rock Creek Parkway at Ohio Drive – Closed. Jan. 19 at 6 a.m. through Jan. 21 at 6 a.m. 
• 3rd Street Tunnel – Remains open with all exits closed. The tunnel will close Jan. 19 at 6 a.m. through Jan. 21 at 6 a.m.
• 9th Street Tunnel – Closed to all traffic.
• 12th Street Tunnel – Closed to all traffic.
• E Street Tunnel – Closed from Potomac River Freeway northbound and southbound.
• Independence Ave/Maine Ave from 12th Street, SW to Memorial Bridge – Closed to all traffic.
