Hundreds of Cascadias recalled for exhaust defect that could spark a fire

Published:

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will recall hundreds of Freightliner Cascadias due to a possible exhaust pipe defect.

The recall was issued for 2022 model year Cascadias with a Cummins engine and battery boxes mounted between the frame rail built at the Cleveland manufacturing plant built between April 1, 2021 and July 12, 2021.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents, the exhaust pipe outlet (also known as the exhaust pipe mitigator) may have been mis-installed, facing the tip towards battery boxes mounted directly above between the frame rail. This could cause the battery box to melt and increase the risk of a fire.

A total of 460 vehicles are impacted by the recall.

Indications of an exhaust defect include residue on surrounding components, melting of surrounding components and/or smell of melted materials.

DTNA will notify dealers and customers of the recall via certified mail on November 14, 2021. Repairs will be conducted at DTNA certified service facilities.

Earlier this month, DTNA issued a recall for more than 100,000 Freightliner Cascadia trucks for a defect that could “lead to a complete loss of steering control.”
