Man trying to kick out semi’s windows is fatally shot by trucker

Police in Louisiana say that a truck driver was acting in self defense when he opened fire on a man attempting to break into his truck in a parking lot on Sunday.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 a.m. on February 21 in Ringgold, Louisiana.

According to Bienville Parish Sheriff John Ballance, a trucker had asked and received permission to park and sleep in the lot at a Pot Luck & Liquor store.

A suspect who was later identified as 35 year old Jonathan Raney attempted to break into the business. Following that attempt, Raney reportedly attempted to break out the driver’s side and passenger side window on the parked truck by hanging onto the mirror and kicking the windows repeatedly.

The truck driver fired four shots at Raney.

Raney was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The truck driver told police that he feared for his life and was allowed to leave. Ballance said that a preliminary investigation showed that the truck driver acted in self defense.

Police are awaiting test results to determine whether substance use was a factor in Raney’s behavior.
