PennDOT truck travel restrictions start at 7 PM

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will begin weather-related travel restrictions starting on Monday evening.

As winter weather is expected to bring icy conditions to Pennsylvania roadways, PennDOT announced on Monday that they would implement several vehicle restrictions starting at 7 p.m.

Starting at 7 p.m. on January 25, PennDOT is placing Tier 1 restrictions on the following roadways:

  • Interstate 70 in both directions from the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) to the Maryland state line;
  • Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) between the New Stanton and Breezewood interchanges;
  • The entire length of Interstate 83 in both directions; and
  • The entire length of Interstate 99 in both directions.

Starting at 10 p.m. PennDOT will impose Tier 1 restrictions on Interstate 80 from Interstate 79 to Interstate 81.

Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are banned from travel on affected roadways:

  • Tractors without trailers;
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers;
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers;
  • Enclosed cargo delivery trucks that meet the definition of a CMV;
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers;
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes;
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches not carrying chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATD’s); and
  • motorcycles

On all roadways with travel restrictions, the speed limit will be lowered to 45 m.p.h. for all vehicles. Commercial vehicles that are not affected by the travel ban are restricted to the right lane on all roadways with reduced speed limits.

PennDOT is recommending that drivers avoid any unnecessary travel.
