Police investigating fiery fuel tanker crash that claimed the life of a truck driver

Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal single vehicle crash that happened in Frederick County on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. on March 23 on I-70 at Exit 68 near Mount Airy, Maryland, according to a news release from Maryland State Police.

Police say that a tanker truck hauling diesel fuel was traveling west on I-70 when the driver veered off the left side of the interstate into the median, overturning.

The truck caught fire shortly after the crash.

Police say that the fuel truck driver, 57 year old William J. Costigan, died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident shut down I-70 for hours on Tuesday as crews worked to extinguish the fire and investigate the fatal crash. All lanes reopened around 9 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Maryland State Police.
