Portion of California’s Highway 1 washed away in major storm

A portion of Highway 1 in California has been swept into the ocean following a major rain storm. 

The roadway began to slide on Thursday, but crumbled fully away on Friday, January 29th near the San Obispo County line just south of Big Sur.

According to ABC 7 News, an “atmospheric river event” has caused more than 14 inches of rain to fall in some parts of San Luis Obispo County throughout Wednesday and Thursday, causing flooding and mudslides, which carried the portion of Highway 1 into the ocean.

As of Friday afternoon, there is no estimated time frame for repairs, and drivers are instructed to find alternate routes.
