A repaired stretch of Highway 1 in California is expected to reopen April 23 following a major storm that was swept the road into the ocean nearly three months ago
More than 14 inches of rain caused flooding and mudslides, which left a 150-foot-damaged section of the road to alter traffic within parts of Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. Until the reopening, Big Sur was open and accessible from Monterey County in the north, and northern San Luis Obispo County beach communities were accessible from the south.
Caltrans Spokesperson Colin Jones said the roadway is opening more than two months ahead of schedule, which will allow more travel and benefit the area.
Caltrans said crews have been working on the $12 million highway rebuild project seven days a week, for twelve hours a day since the storm.
The newly repaired road will be reopened by noon April 23.
