The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has confirmed that two people died and several others were hurt after a road was washed away in George County on Monday.
The incident occurred Monday night on Highway 26 near near Crossroads Road in Lucedale, Mississippi.
Rain likely brought to the area by Hurricane Ida washed away the two lane highway, leaving a hole about 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep.
A total of seven vehicles crashed into the hole on Highway 26.
According to MHP, two people are confirmed dead. Ten others are hurt with three of those people listed in critical condition.
“I’ve never seen anything in my 23 years in law enforcement like this,” Trooper Cal Robertson of the Mississippi Highway Patrol told CNN.
“While we are still in the early stages of this investigation, motorists can expect Highway 26 to be closed at this location until further notice,” MHP said on Tuesday morning.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation will be inspecting the area and formulating a plan for repairs.
