Truckers discover body of Illinois man inside gas tanker

Published:

Authorities in Illinois are investigating after a man’s body was discovered inside of a gas tanker.

The body was discovered around 10 a.m. on Friday, June 4, at a gas transfer hub near Buckley, Illinois, according to local outlet WCIA.

Coroner Bill Cheatum said that the body was discovered after two truck drivers noticed problems with unloading fuel from the tanker for a couple of days. The truckers reportedly looked into the tanker, discovered the body inside, and called 911.

Multiple agencies including the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department, the county coroner, a Hazmat team, and state police responded to the scene.

The body was later identified as Garrett Mayer, 29, of Nashville, Illinois.

Cheatum did not provide information on how long the body had been in the tank or whether foul play was suspected.

An autopsy was performed on Saturday. Toxicology results are pending.

The incident remains under investigation.
