The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is warning drivers to “always expect the unexpected” following a serious accident on I-10 on Monday.
The incident occurred Monday evening on I-10 near Morongo, California, according to the CHP’s San Gorgonio Pass division.
Troopers say that the preliminary investigation shows that a truck was eastbound on I-10 when a tandem set of wheels/tires became detached from the axle.
The wheel/tires continued eastbound, then bounced over the center wall divider and landed directly on top of a westbound Subaru.
Both occupants of the Subaru were taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries but are expected to survive.
CHP says that officers at the Desert Hills Inspection Facility will conduct a “thorough inspection” to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.
“While we understand some things are unavoidable, we want to remind you to always be aware of your surroundings. Having situational awareness could mean the difference between life and death when faced with an unexpected challenge. Always expect the unexpected and do your best to avoid complacency; especially when operating a motor vehicle,” CHP said.
CHP shared several photos from the incident, which you can view below.
