On Tuesday, Virginia State Police (VSP) issued a truck travel advisory for the Fancy Gap area due to severe wind.
Around noon on Tuesday, VSP issued a travel advisory for truckers traveling on I-77 near the Virginia/North Carolina state line, effective February 2 — 3:
Virginia State Police is advising commercial motor vehicles with a gross weight of less than 25,000 lbs. to avoid using Interstate 77 through the Fancy Gap region, which is between the 2 and 3 mile markers inside Virginia. Commercial vehicles with a gross weight of less than 25,000 lbs. are advised to seek an alternate route until the winds safely subside. The I-77 travel lanes are open to through traffic, but motorists are urged to use extreme caution when traveling through the Fancy Gap area.
According to VSP, four trucks overturned on I-77 near mile marker 2 on Tuesday morning.
The first blowover happened at 5:38 a.m. as a truck traveling north on I-77 was toppled by wind, causing the truck to land on a guardrail. The truck driver wasn’t hurt.
At 6:18 a.m., a second truck overturned on northbound I-77. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
A third tractor trailer overturned at 7:47 a.m. and a fourth at 9:03 a.m. Neither truck driver was hurt.
