Burglary suspect with 5 active warrants ends police pursuit with fatal crash into big rig

Indiana State Police (ISP) say that a suspect wanted on multiple charges died after making a sudden lane change and rear-ending a semi truck during a high speed police pursuit.

The incident began shortly after 8 p.m. on February 9 in Michigan City, Indiana.

The Michigan City Police Department responded to an address on Carlon Ct. for a reported burglary in progress.

Officers soon became involved in a pursuit when the suspect fled in a white 2009 Chevrolet Impala.

The Impala driver led police onto westbound I-94 from U.S. 421.

An ISP trooper from the Lowell District spotted the Impala traveling at a high rate of speed as it entered Porter County. The trooper activated his emergency lights and sirens as the Impala driver continued to flee.

“When the vehicle approached the 22 mile-marker, the driver made a sudden lane change and rear ended a semi that was traveling in the middle lane.  This impact resulted in the vehicle traveling underneath the semi and being wedged under the trailer.  The driver of the semi pulled over to the right shoulder where troopers attempted to render aid to the driver.  As a result of the impact, the driver was pinned inside the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries,” ISP said in a news release.

The truck driver wasn’t hurt.

The suspect was later identified as Michigan City resident Olajuan R. Nuttall, 29.

ISP said that Nuttall had 5 active warrants for various felonies and misdemeanors all originating in LaPorte County.
