The Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) is reminding drivers about how to deal with animals in the roadway after a tanker truck hit a house last week.
On Monday, WSP said in a Facebook post that troopers assisted the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office with a post-crash inspection of a CMV that crashed into a house.
The truck driver reportedly told troopers that he veered off the roadway to avoid a deer.
No one was hurt in the crash.
WSP took the opportunity to offer several tips on how drivers should respond to wildlife in the road.
- Do not swerve from your lane.
- Brake firmly and keep the steering wheel straight.
- If you can’t avoid hitting the animal, release the brake to move the nose of the vehicle up – causing the striking point to be higher.
- If your vehicle is in a crash but isn’t disabled, move your vehicle off the roadway.
- If it is disabled, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on.
- Call 911 for assistance.
