Fiery explosion from blown tire destroys luxury vehicles mere hours after driver’s tire check

A portion of Interstate 95 was shut down for several hours on Sunday night after a car hauler caught fire, destroying a collection of luxury vehicles.

The incident occurred on September 4th between Four Oaks and Benson, North Carolina.

ABC 15 News reports that the owner-operator was hauling a private collection of luxury cars from New York City to Miami when he heard what sounded like an explosion behind him. A fire soon broke out and the driver tried to put out the flames, but he eventually had to give up and flee the scene because the fire became too large.

The enclosed trailer contained a Porsche, Ferrari, a BMW M8, Lincoln Navigator, Audi S4 and a Jeep Rubicon, which were all destroyed in the fire. The trucker says he had stopped at a truck stop in Virginia just a couple of hours before to check all of the tires.

Firefighters who responded to the scene said that the tires and batteries on the cars were blowing up like fireworks when they arrived. The truck driver was not injured in the incident. No further information has been released.
