ROCK HILL, SC (September 23, 2022)Form 2290 for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax must be filed by drivers of vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more. When filing it is possible to make mistakes or for the information to change at a later date. If this happens, the way to resolve this in most cases is to file a Form 2290 amendment, which is designed to make changes to Form 2290.

In order to make filing amendments a smooth and simple process, ExpressTruckTax offers a fast and easy solution for filing any amendments that need to be filed on Form 2290. There are a total of three types of amendments that can be filed on Form 2290: Gross Weight Increase, VIN Correction, or Mileage Exceeded.

A Gross Weight Increase Amendment needs to be filed if the Taxable Gross Weight of a vehicle increases or was filed for less than the actual weight of the vehicle. The Taxable Gross Weight of a vehicle is the total weight of the truck, the trailer, and the maximum load it can carry. If the actual weight is greater than the weight that was entered into Form 2290, a Gross Weight Increase Amendment must be filed and then the difference in the tax owed must be paid.

A VIN Correction Amendment must be filed when the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of a vehicle is entered into Form 2290 and is off by a few numbers. If this is the case and Form 2290 was filed with ExpressTruckTax, the VIN Correction Amendment will be able to be filed free of charge.

A Mileage Exceeded Amendment must be filed for a vehicle that was filed as suspended but actually ended up driving over the mileage limit. If a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more drives 5,000 miles or less in a year, or less than 7,500 miles in a year if it is used for agricultural purposes, it is considered suspended by the IRS. Form 2290 must still be filed in this case but no tax will be owed. If the vehicle does end up exceeding this mileage limit, a Mileage Exceeded Amendment must be filed and the tax amount for the entire year will need to be paid to the IRS.
