Tired truckers will once again be able to enjoy a free cup of joe at certain Washington State rest areas as officials resume a popular program.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has for years coordinated with volunteer groups to operate a free coffee program at 34 designated rest areas. WSDOT says that the program reduces drowsy driving and helps improve highway safety.
In March of 2020, the free coffee program was halted due to COVID-19 safety concerns.
However, as of May 20, 2022, WSDOT is once again allowing volunteer groups to come in to provide free coffee to travelers.
The program also allows travelers to learn about the volunteer groups and make donations to their causes.
WSDOT warns that it make take some time to get the free coffee program up and running again and that some sites may not have volunteers scheduled on the first available weekend. Not every location has free coffee volunteers every day; service depends on volunteer group availability, WSDOT said.
