A girl was impaled and several other people were injured after a chain reaction crash involving at least one tractor trailer on Monday morning.
The accident happened on August 8th in Colleton County, South Carolina.
According to ABC 15 News, a car heading south on Interstate 95 suddenly left the roadway, struck the cable barrier, and reentered the roadway, where it came to a stop in a lane of moving traffic. The car was then struck by a tractor trailer, pushing it into a BMW. The force of the impact shoved a cargo rail in the back of the BMW into the backseat, impaling a 10-year-old passenger.
As a result of this crash, a pickup towing a concrete trailer overturned onto the left shoulder, scattering debris and causing several other vehicles to swerve out of the way. Two more semi trucks were able to stop in response to the crashes, but blocked the southbound lanes as a result.
Emergency vehicles were forced to drive the wrong way on the highway to reach the scene. A helicopter was called for the impaled girl, but was unable to fly due to fog. The girl and two other adults were eventually transported to a trauma center. Two other people were also injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
First responders say that bystanders and people involved in the crash were “remarkable in assisting each other and caring for the injured” before help could arrive.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident. No further information has been released.
