A hearing for the truck driver involved in a serious crash with a school bus full of high schoolers has been postponed as the court searches for an interpreter.
Truck driver Victor Santos was scheduled for his initial hearing in Kosciusko County at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 17th for a crash that took place in Indiana over the weekend. Now, the hearing has been postponed until Monday, November 21st, due to the need for an interpreter so that Santos can understand the charges being brought against him, reported WANE 15 News.
Santos is currently facing 26 felony counts, 22 of which are for criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon, along with 4 counts of causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle. Officers were on their way to “intercept” the semi truck after receiving multiple reports of the rig driving recklessly when the wreck occurred. A total of 16 people were hurt in the incident.
Police say they could smell alcohol on Santos at the time of the wreck and that his eyes looked “red and glossy”, and his speech was “slurred and slow.” His blood alcohol content was .13% that evening after a blood draw at the hospital.
Santos is already a registered sex offender who was convicted of rape in 1999.
