Man arrested for road rage murder of 30 year old truck driver on I-20 in Georgia

A man wanted in the fatal shooting of truck driver last spring has finally been arrested, police say.

On Tuesday, January 25, the U.S. Marshalls and Baton Rouge police arrested Georgia resident Deron Demond Bell, 20, in connection with the shooting death of trucker Joseph Lee Briggs Jr., 30, a resident of South Carolina.

Briggs was killed on April 9, 2021, in Greensboro, Georgia.

Authorities said that Briggs was traveling west on I-20 when his vehicle veered off the road, crossed the eastbound lanes, and crashed into a wooded area near mile marker 132.

When the Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, deputies discovered that Briggs Jr. had been shot multiple times in a suspected road rage incident and had died.

Arrest warrants were issued for Bell one day after the death of Briggs.

Following months of investigation, police were finally able to track Bell down to a Louisiana apartment complex, where he was arrested without incident.

Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison told the Union Recorder that “We have been working closely with the U.S. Marshal’s Service ever since the day the homicide investigation began. They had been working this case diligently. We had received information that he was somewhere in the Baton Rouge, La. area. As a result of that information, they finally caught a break, and with some information they had received, they were able to find him and lock him up.”
