Motorist’s attempt to cross highway through median puts van directly in path of semi

Published:

Six people were hurt after a van attempted to cross a highway using a median, causing a crash with a moving tractor trailer.

The accident happened on November 29th at about 9:20 p.m. in Montoursville, Pennsylvania.

According to Penn Live, the driver of the van had pulled onto the median of Interstate 180 and was attempting to cross the eastbound lanes of the roadway to use a crossover when it pulled into the path of an oncoming semi truck. The van and truck collided, injuring six of the nine people in the van.

When first responders arrived, all nine people were still inside of the van and had to be extricated. It took around 45 minutes to get everyone out of the wrecked vehicle. Three doors had to be removed and a hole had to be cut in the van.

Six people were transported to the hospital while three refused treatment. Three of the injured were reported to be in serious condition. No injuries to the truck driver have been reported.

The eastbound lanes of I-180 near Indian Park were closed until around 3 a.m. as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene. It is not clear if any citations have been issued as a result of the incident.
