New York State Troopers are hiding in plain sight for ‘Operation Hardhat’ enforcement

Published:

The New York State Police (NYSP) have kicked off their annual enforcement effort to target reckless drivers in work zones.

Each year for “Operation Hardhat,” NYSP troopers partner with the New York State Department of Transportation to crack down on driving violations in construction zones in order to protect road workers.

The campaign is running now through the fall, troopers say.

During the enforcement details, NYSP troopers will be disguised as construction workers in an attempt to catch drivers performing illegal activities in construction zones.

On April 13, 2022, troopers conducted an Operation Hardhat detail in the active work zone on State Route 12 in the city of Utica and issued 56 tickets for speeding, seat belt violations, cellphone use, and other violations.

According to NYSP, in 2021 2,336 traffic tickets were issued during “Operation Hardhat” details throughout the state.
