New York troopers go undercover as road workers for multiple ‘Operation Hard Hat’ details

Published:

New York State Police (NYSP) have recently conducted multiple enforcement details targeting reckless drivers in work zones.

Over the past several weeks, NYSP took part in “Operation Hard Hat” enforcement events across the state. As part of “Operation Hard Hat,” NYSP troopers are disguised as construction workers in an attempt to catch drivers performing illegal activities in construction zones.

During a June 21, Operation Hard Hat detail, NYSP troopers monitored traffic on I-90 in Rensselaer County while road crews made roadway repairs. Thirty-five citations were issued during the detail. Twenty-five of the citations were for speeding.

Another Operation Hard Hat effort took place on June 21 on State Route 17 in Deposit. This detail resulted in 11 tickets issued for speeding.

“Motorists are urged to drive responsibly in work zones.  Please follow the postage signage and put down any distractions.  Move over a lane when it’s safe and slow down when encountering vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights. Everyone working on the side of the road deserves to get back home to their loved ones!” NYSP said.

NYSP has also conducted Operation Hard Hat traffic enforcement on St-400 in Aurora.
