Pilot killed after crashing plane into big rig on North Carolina interstate

Published:

Federal officials are investigating a fatal plane vs. semi truck crash that occurred in North Carolina on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on February 16 in Lexington, North Carolina.

Officials say that 43 year old pilot Raymond John Ackley attempted to take off from the  Lexington-Davidson County Airport and crashed into the rear of a semi truck traveling on I-85 at mile marker 88.

The crash caused the truck to roll over off the interstate and catch fire.

Ackley died at the scene.

Truck driver Barrin Lamont Davis, 41, was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Officials say that the plane was a twin-engine Beechcraft Baron. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says that a mechanical issue is believed to be the cause of the crash, but the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation.
