School bus attempts left turn across traffic, leads to crash with oncoming semi truck

Published:

Three children were seriously hurt in a wreck between a school bus and a semi truck in Nebraska on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened on September 27th at 3:57 p.m. near Champion, Nebraska.

According to News Channel Nebraska, the bus attempted to make a left hand turn off Highway 15A onto 736 Road near Champion when a 1992 Peterbilt hauling a loaded grain trailer collided with the bus. The semi truck then struck the rear passenger side of the school bus, sending it spinning 90 degrees before overturning onto the driver’s side. The semi truck then continued a short distance before leaving the roadway, crossing a ditch, and coming to a rest on a property at 32815 15 A Spur.

11 students between 6 and 11 years old and the driver were on the bus at the time of the accident. All passengers were taken to a nearby hospital, but only three children were transported to a regional trauma center a short time later. The 20-year-old truck driver was not seriously hurt in the incident.

The accident is still under investigation, and officials have not disclosed who was at fault.
